Honoring Bebe

The Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Taskforce is committed to promoting public awareness of mental health in communities of color, erasing the stigma, and providing access to culturally competent mental health treatment and services. The Taskforce honors renowned author, writer, and rhythmic storyteller, Bebe Moore Campbell, who broke new territory by illuminating the impact of mental health in diverse communities.

The Honorable Albert Wynn, former Congressman, Maryland 4th District, introduced a posthumous resolution to recognize Campbell's mental health advocacy devoted to her support for underrepresented communities. A bipartisan 110th Congress approved H.Con. Res.134, and through a consensus vote on June 2, 2008, July became the Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month.

The Taskforce, in collaboration with NAMI Urban Los Angeles (the NAMI affiliate that Bebe Moore Campbell co-founded), remains dedicated to preserving Campbell's name, honoring her legacy, and advancing the importance of mental health equity.

  • Regina Malry-Campbell

    egina Malry-Campbell is a retired experienced airline and non-profit executive focusing on Sales Management and Revenue generation. Additionally, during her career she managed union employees for 17 years and spent six years in Human Resources with a focus on Labor Relations.

    While working for the airline as a Sales Manager she attained great success in team management, building high performance teams, strategic planning, contract management and implementation planning. She is action oriented and known for being a leader and consensus builder energized by collaborative teamwork. She has received numerous awards and recognition for her outstanding leadership skills.

    With a strong interest in mental health, she is currently a member of the Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Awareness Task Force where she works on the website, marketing promotion and event coordination to ensure high quality mental health education to communities of color.

    Regina holds a Master’s degree in Marketing from Roosevelt University and a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance from Grambling State University.

    She is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.

  • Dr. Linda Wharton Boyd

    Linda Wharton Boyd, Ph.D. has spent much of her professional career working to improve the lives of others. She is a communications professional with a proven record of success in communications, marketing, public affairs, media relations, community outreach, organizational development, strategic planning, and problem solving with the ability to effectively design, implement and manage internal and external communications and marketing programs, projects, information campaigns, and promotions. She consistently achieves organizational goals beyond expectations.

    In her capacity as a mental health advocate, she serves as the chair of the Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Awareness Task Force where she guides the group of professionals in educating and empowering communities of color impacted by mental health conditions through strategic advocacy, educational campaigns, collaborations, and intentional mobilization of resources. Dr. Wharton-Boyd led the effort in to get the support of former US Representatives Albert Wynn [D-MD] and Diane Watson [D-CA] to co-sign legislation to secure a bipartisan concurrent resolution passed by the United States Congress designating July as Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month.

    With a wealth of experiences to draw upon in strategic communications, public relations, media, telecommunications, and external affairs in both the public and private sectors, Dr. Wharton Boyd also serves as the Chief Communications Officer and Director for External Affairs and Strategic Partnerships the DC Health Benefit Exchange Authority, the , the public-private partnership responsible for implementing the landmark Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, known as ACA or “Obamacare” in the District of Columbia. In this role, she also serves as the engagement liaison to the community at-large, the Council of the District of Columbia, District government agencies, Federal agencies, and the White House.

    Dr. Wharton Boyd is also the founder and chief operating officer of the Wharton Group, a family owned and operated full service strategic communication firm in the DMV region.

    Wharton Boyd holds a Ph.D. in Communications and Master’s in Speech Communications from the University of Pittsburgh as well as professional Certified Municipal Manager designation from George Washington University Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration.

  • Dr. Judi Moore Latta

    Judi Moore Latta, Ph.D. is Howard University professor emerita, formerly on the faculty of the Department of Media, Journalism and Film. She previously served as executive director of Communications and Marketing for the University; as director of WHUR-WORLD, 96.3, HD-2; and as the first woman in the role of interim general manager of the public broadcast station WHUT-TV. Earlier in her career, she worked as reporter/producer at WUSA-TV and at National Public Radio (NPR) where she became the network’s first education reporter, executive producer of Special Programs and creator of “NPR’s Latin File” (first radio network Hispanic daily news program). At NPR she earned the George Foster Peabody Award as senior producer of the 26-part documentary series, “Wade in the Water: African American Sacred Music Traditions” and for dozens of productions, awards recognition from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, American Women in Radio and Television, National Education Association, National Association of Black Journalists and National Federation of Community Broadcasters. She holds the following degrees: B.S. from Hampton Institute, M.A. from Boston University and Ph.D. from the University of Maryland College Park.

    Two of her books are God Ain’t Sleep: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (2015) and Beyond Roses--An Obligation to Speak (2020). She is married to Joseph B. Latta, D.D.S and lives in Silver Spring, Maryland.

  • Patrice Gaines

    Patrice Gaines is an author and a creative writing and transformation coach. Her best-selling autobiography Laughing in the Dark details her journey from heroin user and abused woman to award-winning journalist and good mother.

    Most recently, she co-authored Say Their Names: How Black Lives Came to Matter in America. .

    Ms. Gaines was a reporter at the Washington Post for 16 years and member of a reporting team that was a Pulitzer Prize finalist. She has received prestigious residencies at both Yaddo and MacDowell artists’ communities as well as a Soros Justice Media Fellowship.

    She has written for National Public Radio, Essence, the New York Times magazine, and numerous other publications.

    Ms. Gaines is also a veteran justice advocate, who has taught and spoken in jails and prisons around the country.

  • Ellis Gordon, Jr.

    Ellis Gordon, Jr. is the former husband of the late Bebe Moore Campbell. Mr. Gordon is the founding principal of Gordon/Barash Associates, Inc., a full service financial advisory group specializing in community economic development, outsource CFO services, financial structuring, capital acquisition, strategic planning and crisis management.

    Mr. Gordon holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Texas Southern University, Houston, Texas. He obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree in Finance and Marketing from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, Illinois.

  • Nicole Walker Parks

    Nicole Parks has been a Professional School Counselor for 28 years for Prince George’s County Public School system. As a school counselor she has served in many capacities from career counselor, parent advocate, and mentor. In 2011, she was awarded the Dr. Jean Phillips leadership award for outstanding leadership and contributions to the children and families of Prince George’s County Public School.

    In addition to working for Prince George’s County Public School system at Laurel Elementary, she has utilized her counseling expertise in a variety of areas outside of the school setting. She currently is the Lead Counselor for the School Based Counseling Program, which provides substance abuse counseling for at-risk students. Nicole was a parent facilitator at Prince George’s County Department of Social Services for the Strengthening Families program, where she delivers parent training for at-risk families.

    Nicole is an advocate for mental health and strengthening families through purposeful counseling.

    Nicole holds a Masters of Education in School Counseling and a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Pittsburgh, In addition to her many achievements, Nicole shares her life with her wonderful husband, Carroll D. Parks, and her three step-children.

  • Courtney Lang

    Courtney Lang is the founder and principal of Langco + Partners, a public affairs and strategic communications firm recognized for advocacy, activism, and grassroots mobilization. Courtney advises clients on achieving health equity, access, affordability, structural racism, and the importance of systemic change amidst resilience. Courtney’s commitment to improving the human condition and identifying social needs galvanizes public conversation and coalition building. Previously Courtney served as the Senior Director of Alliance Development for Pfizer Inc. and US Public Affairs Liaison for Eli Lilly & Company. She determined the strategic focus for national advocacy and alliance development activities. Courtney provided expertise in legislative partnerships that support federal and state-wide priorities, including strategic guidance on policy, disease management, and care coordination. Courtney earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Pepperdine University and a Juris Doctor from The Ohio State University College of Law. She also studied Comparative Health Law and Policy at St. Anne’s College, Oxford University in the United Kingdom. Recently, Courtney has proudly served as an adjunct professor of Media Law for her alma mater Pepperdine University. She is a native of Washington, DC, and has resided in Los Angeles, CA, and Cleveland, OH.
